Peter Margittai Architect will be featured on an upcoming episode of HGTV’s Designers’ Challenge.
Designers’ Challenge is a half-hour series that follows one homeowner per episode through the decision-making process of selecting from among three designers' room renovation plans, created just for the homeowner.
Filmed in August 2005, Margittai was one of three designers who proposed options for a renovation project in a Fox Chapel home. The existing room was narrow with high ceilings and difficult to furnish. The owners wanted to convert an extra room into a place where they could entertain and relax.
“The original architect sited the house on the landscape in a very sensitive way — it features multiple levels built into the hillside,” explained Margittai. “We used this aspect to set the conceptual direction for our renovation plan.”
Margittai’s option converted the room into a sanctuary that reflects the materials found in nature — wood, stone, light, color and texture. The staircase flows into the space like a waterfall. The existing field stone fireplace towers over the space like a cliff. The wine cellar becomes a grotto. These features complement the existing strengths of the room, including the high ceilings, white terrazzo floor and windows with striking views of the outdoors.
The selected plan will be revealed when the episode airs in 2006. (Date to be announced.)
